Barisan Mountains P88

Peach & Pandan

Nestled within the misty landscapes of the Barisan Mountains in Sidikalang, North Sumatra, this P88 lot carries a descendant of two of Indonesia's most celebrated coffee regions. Though the variety was found thriving in the highlands of Gayo, Takengon, it found a new home when producers brought it to the Wahana Estate in the Lake Toba region. Believed to be a specially selected Catimor line originally brought to Aceh, this variety has adapted to the unique microclimate of its new terroir, developing a distinct character.

The history of P88 dates back to its introduction from Colombia by the Dutch, showing a natural compatibility for Indonesian soil from the very beginning. Early research by the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI) highlighted its uniform beans and exceptional flavour potential, prompting Wahana to plant the variety in 2011 to observe its long-term development. To elevate its qualities, the estate utilized an extended 72-hour anaerobic natural fermentation coupled with a slow, 33-day drying process, successfully highlighting its natural & exquisite character.

This meticulous approach yields a beautifully expressive coffee that redefines the classic expectations of a Sumatran coffee. This coffee opens with a comforting, aromatic sweetness reminiscent of Pandan Leaves, layered with juicy, bright Peach, leaving a smooth and unforgettable impression on the palate.
