Born in the highlands of Sidikalang, North Sumatra, this Longberry coffee carries a history as intriguing as its cup. Once thought to trace back to Ethiopia’s famed Longberry Harrar, the variety was long known only in Aceh. Years ago, a producer brought it to the Lake Toba region for trial cultivation. Today, it has evolved into a distinct character, separate from its Acehnese counterpart.
The name Longberry itself reflects the coffee cherry and bean’s appearance, which are long and slender compared to other varietals. Wahana has dedicated years of research to understanding how different processes shape flavour, including wet, dry, honey, and wet-hulled. From this pursuit came the Longberry Anaerobic Natural, a method once thought impossible in North Sumatra due to its unpredictable rainy seasons. By carefully controlling fermentation and drying, they discovered a way to allow this variety’s vibrant character to unfold fully.
As a nod to the varietal, this coffee captures an exceptional flavour profile that will surprise your senses. The fusion of a unique varietal and process creates a resemblance to delightful Orange Parfaits, with a hint of Dragon Fruit and a smooth touch of Vanilla—such a lovely profile from Sumatran coffee.
