The Peaberries - Kenya
LAVENDER, EUCALYPTUS, BERRIES, CITRUSY
What is a Peaberry?
Have you ever heard of Peaberry? Normally, coffee beans grow two to a fruit, flat against each other like halves of a peanut. But, peaberry is a natural mutation, where there is only one self-growing bean inside a coffee cherry. Technically, peaberry is a defect, it lacks the familiar flat side that normal beans have and is smaller than a standard bean. As we know, peaberries are estimated to make up around 5–10% of a harvest. Coffee labeled "peaberry" means that peaberries are picked during the harvest process and collected together to sell separately. Peaberry absorbs all the nutrients in cherries, so it has more density. Denser coffee produces a more complex, intense, and flavorful taste. It also has uniqueness and certain qualities that can’t replicate with normal coffee beans.
This Peaberry comes from Baragwi, a cooperative farmer society in Kenya. Kenya is considered by many as the world’s number one quality producer. The farmers mainly grow SL28 and SL34, which are largely recognized as delivering a consistently good cup profile. The coffees are traditionally processed with dry fermentation, before being washed and graded in channels, and dried on raised beds. This coffee represents all of the good things about Kenyan Coffee; bright acidity, full body, and this peaberry contributes the distinctive flavor in the cup. We realized immediately that it was a highly-rated Kenyan coffee the first time we cupped it. It has floral and spicy notes (rarely found in high-quality Kenyan coffee) like LAVENDER, EUCALYPTUS, intense BERRIES, and CITRUSY. It is the best deal for all Kenyan coffee lovers and a good chance for people who haven’t tried Kenyan specialty coffee. Don’t miss it, you'll probably only get it once.
